Focus on Nature

Nature-based programs for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities offer meaningful opportunities to connect with the outdoors while supporting well-being and independence. These programs are designed to be inclusive and accessible, as well as empower individuals to explore new skills and abilities.

Our Horticulture Program offers members a stimulating and therapeutic approach to teaching the basic principles of practical gardening with the objective of understanding healthy living and meal preparation. By utilizing our properties’ green space, members connect with the local community to cultivate shared garden plots. The hands-on programming includes choosing which herbs, produce, flowers, and plants to grow, planting the seeds and tending the crops, as well harvesting, distributing, cooking, and eating the fruits of their labor!

Environmental Stewardship program members can volunteer as environmental stewards who participate in Friends of the Forest Preserves regularly scheduled stewardship events. These events vary from collecting seeds for spring planting to cutting and burning invasive plants. Stewardship events are among the most popular as both staff and members enjoy working outside and improving the environment.
